For wealth managers, these principles echo the same standards that have always applied to human decision-making. In practical terms, governance starts with clarity over the AI’s role in the decision chain. Firms need to define where AI can act autonomously, where it only advises, and where final authority must remain human. That clarity protects clients, but it also protects advisors, ensuring they are not held responsible for outputs they cannot explain.

It also means building oversight into the lifecycle of every model, from the data it is trained on, to how its performance is monitored, to how it is retired when it no longer meets the standard. In the best-run firms, these checks are not bolted on after launch; they are part of the operating discipline, just as compliance reviews are for investment products.

 

Preparing for the Next Phase

While today’s governance conversations focus on current risks, firms also need to consider where the technology is heading. AI-managed assets could approach $6 trillion globally within the next few years, increasing the chance that similar models could make similar decisions at the same time, and with similar consequences.

Resilience will depend not just on model accuracy, but on diversity of approach, the ability to intervene quickly, and the discipline to test how systems behave under stress. This is where governance evolves from a defensive shield into a strategic capability.

Firms that can adapt oversight to more autonomous, interconnected AI systems will be better positioned to use them creatively, without amplifying market risks or compromising client objectives.
